Most people think of a business person as either some kind of poker-faced accountant or some hyped-up extroverted salesman/woman. You rarely read about about an imaginative business person and less often hear of one who is highly creative, artistic, and visionary.

The popular concept of a business person, as publicized by the media, is someone who is rather dull and linear in their thinking. They are more often referred to as “hard-nosed” and “practical”. In fact, many business people themselves buy into this mistaken stereotype.

Imagination and creativity is at the heart of all business success. While corporations themselves may appear to be based on stringent rules and regulations, the entrepreneurs who started these companies have all, without exception, been highly creative and imaginative individuals. The corporations that remain innovative and progressive continue to encourage freedom of imaginative expression within their corporate structure… Apple being a prime example.

Napoleon Hill, in his famous book “Think And Grow Rich” goes into great detail about the influential role of imagination in business success.

He talks about two types of imaginative faculties: “synthetic” imagination and “creative” imagination. Through “synthetic” imagination, a person arranges old concepts, ideas, plans, and business models into new combinations. Technically, whilst nothing new is created, the fresh, new approach can yield amazing results.

For example, the self-help grocery store where customers do all the work of shopping is now very familiar to us, in fact we would be hard pushed to remember when things were any different. However, the original business model was to have people come up to the counter of a shop and present their list to the sales assistant who would then run around the store and fetch items for them. Now, with the use of aisles, clear directional signing and shopping carts, the job of a store is to keep stocked and check people out.

In fact, even this idea of checking people out is becoming obsolete, with many stores now offering people the option to check themselves out. Thus, the customer does all the work. Pulling out and wheeling the shopping cart, selecting products and checking themselves out. The result of this arrangement is that the store is more profitable as it can accommodate many more customers and the customer is happier as they are in total control of their shopping experience.

The “creative” imagination borders on the mystical… Here is how Napoleon Hill describes it:

“Through the faculty of creative imagination, the finite mind of man has direct communication with Infinite Intelligence. It is the faculty through which ‘hunches’ and ‘inspirations’ are received. It is by this faculty that all basic, or new ideas are handed over to man. It is through this faculty that individuals may ‘tune in’ or communicate with the subconscious minds of other men.

Business is far from being a game of conservative rule-playing. It is alive with imaginative ideas of how to best serve customers and the marketplace, an aspect of doing business which is seldom mentioned in the media.

As an entrepreneur, start to exercise your imagination, be more creative in how you structure your services and products, put a new spin on how you serve customers. The more you apply creative thinking to your business, not only will you stand apart from your competitors, you will see many more ways to make money, create new channels of supply and demand in your marketplace and ultimately become more profitable.

All the best,

Dave.

Achieve Everything You Want in Life

Friday, June 15th, 2007

“How many times have you set goals, only to see them remain incomplete….”

Stop whatever you are doing and write these words on a piece of paper that you can keep with you at all times. It is a quote from Napoleon Hill

“Dream big dreams; Only big dreams have the power to move men’s souls.”

Is Your Vision for Your Business Built on Bedrock or Sand?

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

In this article Todd Jensen offers excellent advice for all small business owners, whether online or offline.

In fact every business owner (or potential business person) should read, digest and act on this invaluable information.

All the best,

Dave.

—-

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY SOME BUSINESS OWNERS seem so calm and steady, while others are in a constant state of worry and panic?

Surprisingly, the difference between these two scenarios has nothing to do with the operation of the business - it is the vision of the owner.

Your vision for your business provides the foundation for its success, or failure.

Without a strong vision, your business will be buffeted by the winds and storms of life, and end up either precariously perched, or crashing down.

So, how can vision have such a profound effect on the success or failure of a business?

And what is a vision, anyway?

Working with small business owners over the last ten years, I have watched numerous businesses crash like the proverbial house built on sand.

A small percentage of these businesses have grown into successful, thriving enterprises.

Why?

What is the secret to a successful business?

The successful business owners I have worked with over the years had widely different backgrounds, education, and temperaments.

In fact, they did not, as a group, seem any different than the much larger group of struggling business owners.

But over time, I began to spot the one difference that was the key to their success.

They had a vision for their business, and everything they did was in line with that vision.

For some, it was simple. “What do you do?” I would ask.

“I sell metal.” or “I just grow trees.” they would answer.

Many times, their vision was encapsulated in just a few words.

But their vision did not falter, and their strong sense of who and what they were seeped into every aspect of their business.

Struggling business owners, on the other hand, always seem to lack a strong sense of purpose.

In fact, they would often complain over and over again about how they just didn’t know what they were doing.

“I’m just trying to get through the day.” they said.

The first step to a successful business is your vision.

You must spend some time with yourself, figuring out what you truly want out of life.

Your vision must be in line with your personal needs, and you must focus your business vision to meet those needs.

If your daily business activities do not mesh with who you are and what you want, you will constantly be struggling within yourself.

You will lack purpose, and that lack of purpose will invade your business like an infestation of termites in your home.

You don’t have to have a complicated vision, just one that is in line with who you are.

In fact, the more complicated you make things, the less likely you will succeed.

Clarifying your vision is like building your foundation on bedrock.

When you know what you want, your sense of purpose and sense of self provides exactly what your business needs to succeed.

Your vision is the bedrock to the strong, successful business you were meant to own.

You’re A Magnet

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Stephen Pierce writes:

WHEN TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, it’s easiest to think of yourself as a magnet.

As you already know, magnets attract things. But they do it without even trying, right? It’s the same for you. You attract things all the time and most of the time, you do it by default. Most of the time, you are not making a deliberate choice in what you are attracting to you. You get up, go to work, take care of the kids, feed the dog, go to bed - you go about your daily business. Maybe while you do it, you are focused on a problem that needs solved or a bad thing that happened or you are just tired or in a foul mood.

So, while you’re doing that - focusing on something negative - you’re unconsciously attracting negativity to you. No one sets out to attract negativity, of course, but we attract the likeness of what we are thinking about. If you’re thinking about a lack of something in your life, for example, you’ll continue to attract a lack, just like that magnet attracts metal.

If you consciously make a shift in your thinking, however, to something positive - like seeing yourself with abundance instead of scarcity, you will attract abundance.

The key to successfully doing this sounds a little easier than it is, but with practice, you can do it constantly and effectively. Though life will always throw hardships in our way, the key to not letting those hardships stay around and keep you down is to not dwell on them constantly. When one arises, examine it briefly and then figure out how to use it to your advantage or let it go. People tend to have habits of clinging to the bad things in life, the negative, the things we do not like - we dwell on them in our thoughts, we talk about them to our friends, we focus on what we do not like, because it bothers us.

However, by training ourselves to not cling to that negativity - to let it come up, look at it for a minute and then let it go - we are opening ourselves up and making room for the positive. Instead of a lack, we will be open to abundance.

We won’t be a magnet that is repelling all the good things in life simply because we’re in the habit of hanging on to the bad.

Self Motivation : Building The Techniques

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

FEAR AND REWARD ARE TWO most commonly used methods to build motivation in someone. But, these methods are temporary. The only lasting thing is self motivation. Motivation actually is the enthusiasm of doing something. It refers to inner feeling, strong desires, and expectation about something. You may sometimes loose the necessary level of the inner drive to get something done. Self motivation is what you need to boost the level of your inner drive to achieve your goals.

5 Steps for Saying GOODBYE OLD YEAR, So You Can Say HELLO NEW YEAR – REGRET FREE!

Monday, January 1st, 2007

BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER, MAY I WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS 2007.

Happy New Year

To kick off this brand new year, here’s an inspiring article from regular contributor Cari Vollmer.

It is an acknowledged fact that how you start off in January can impact the outcome of your entire year.

Cari offers five great ways to see off the old year and start the new one refreshed and refocussed.

Take Cari’s advice and hit the new year with renewed vigor and turbo-charged dynamic purpose!
All the best,

Dave.

How do you end your year? Without much thought and barely a glance back? Or, do you bend down and kiss the ground you walk on because you made it through another year – just barely!

There’s personal strength, refreshed energy and renewed focus to be gained from mindfully acknowledging and completing the year that has past. Mindfully completing your year is sort of like cleaning out a closet; you feel better AND make room for fresh new stuff that fits better! And hopefully in the year ahead you’ll make everything you add to your life not only fit better, but feel better too.

To help you say GOODBYE 2006 so you can say HELLO 2007 - REGRET FREE, this 5-step process will help. The time you take acknowledging and letting go of the year that has past will set the stage for making 2007 your best year yet!

Step 1: Schedule it. I know you’re busy, but taking a few hours to do this exercise will be time well spent. Put it on your to-do list just like any other commitment. By doing so, you’re committing to not only living your life, but you’ll also be working on your life.

Step 2: Set the stage. Pick a location you love. This could be a favorite room in your house, your favorite coffee house, or some other location that allows you to relax and hear your own thoughts.

Step 3: Get to the heart of it. Center yourself, breathe deeply and begin asking yourself the following question. As you reflect on each question write down your answers.

Don’t judge yourself and be totally honest. (If it helps, at the top of your paper write, “no one will ever have to read this”) Remember, you’re doing this so you can say GOODBYE, once and for all, to the year that has past.

Ask and answer these questions to get to the HEART of your year.

What are my blessings? This is a great question to start with because it opens your heart for things to come.

What were my tangible accomplishments? What did you accomplish that you could measure in some way? (i.e. increase your salary by 10%, lose 15 pounds, clear the clutter in your life)

What were my intangible accomplishments? This question has to do more with personal accomplishments others may not be able to see, but you can. (i.e. started each day with an intention, smiled more, let go of past hurts and old wounds)

What did I learn about myself? Your answers to this question may give you clues to your passions and talents OR reveal how you STOP yourself from living the life you really want. (i.e. I discovered I love interviewing people, so I’ll definitely want to do more of that in 2007!)

Overall, how do I feel about the year that has past? Your answer to this one question gives you insight to how you feel about your life overall. (use a simple 1- 10 scale; 1=things aren’t so great, or 10=my life is fabulous!)

What didn’t I do that I really wish I had? Your answer to this question will give you the choice of letting it go, or making a plan to do it next year. (i.e. I didn’t travel as much as I wanted to, etc.)

What did I do that I have to do again? Your answer to this question will give you insights into what will make next year great. (i.e. I learned more about a topic I love, I hosted my first dinner party, etc.)

Step 4: Say goodbye and thank you. Remind yourself the year is OVER. It has ended. Whether it was a great year or a bomb, the past is the past. It does not define your future - unless you let it.

Step 5: Don’t look back! Now it’s time to LET GO. Be proud of yourself for taking the time to do this exercise (you’re part of an elite group). Forgive yourself and forgive others. Imagine any regrets you have turning to dust and being gently swept away, out of your body and your mind – never to return.

You stand a better chance of having a great year next year by starting the New Year with no unfinished business, no guilt – no regrets.

Let go and say thank you to 2006 for all that it gave you – good and bad. There’s no time like the PRESENT to live the life you really want.

Selfish or SELF Preservation?

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Copyright © 2006 Cari Vollmer

I ONCE SAW A SITCOM WHERE A WOMAN WAS BEING SCOLDED by her spouse for taking a little time for herself. Instead of letting her spouse guilt her, she pounced back with, “It’s not selfish, it’s self preservation!” I loved it! And, it is!

If you’re going to lead a life you feel great about, it’s time to reframe the notion that going after your dream is selfish. It’s not! Rather, it’s what needs to happen if you’re going to honor your heart, soul and purpose in life.

Understanding the Link Between Thoughts and Actions

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

THE WAY YOU FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF, your self-esteem, drives your thoughts. These thoughts transform into actions. The actions that you take are the key factors in getting what you want out of life. If you are not achieving your goals, take some time and evaluate how you feel about yourself.

Achieving your goals takes repeated action and you can’t give up too early. High self-esteem can give you the drive, determination, and personal power necessary to take these actions and be persistent until you achieve success.

However, if you are constantly critical of yourself, then these feelings will lower your self-esteem. If you have low self-esteem, then it will be more difficult to take the right actions to enable you to achieve your goals. This link between thoughts and actions is what keeps you from getting started or what causes you to give up.

So what can you do to conquer self-doubt and energize your actions? It all starts with positive thinking. Start off by spending some time congratulating yourself for what you have already accomplished in life.

Everyone has had their share of wins. Make a list of these accomplishments and what actions you took to make them happen. Think about the obstacles that you overcame or what special actions you took to reach each goal. This is a great way to acknowledge your successes and give your self-confidence a boost. Your list of wins will be the foundation that you build on for your future successes.

Remember that there is a link between thoughts and actions. It’s time to take control of your thoughts. Whenever you start having doubts, pull out your list.

Negative thoughts are the greatest dream killer known to mankind! Telling yourself “I can’t” will lower your self-esteem, reduce the effectiveness of any actions that you take, and prevent you from achieving your goals. Your list of wins is something that can reassure you whenever negative thinking tries to take over your mind.

Instead, tell yourself “I can”. Positive thoughts bring confidence, optimism, and focused action which give you a much better chance of achieving your goals. “I can” is a great way to plant seeds in your mind for positive thoughts. The resulting high self-esteem will provide the extra edge that you need to drive away your fears and eliminate any doubt that keeps you from accomplishing your goals.
All the best,

Dave.

Use Your Wonderful Ability To Model And Integrate Success Traits Into Your Life

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Here’s a brilliant article from John Halderman.

Today, John explores our natural ability to model ourselves on the people and circumstances that surround us every day, and how we can reposition these things to integrate success traits into our lives.

At the end of the article, I’ve added links to a couple of excellent (and FREE) self-development resources that you may want to take a look at.

Enjoy the article.

All the best,

Dave.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX THINGS you have learned in life that you actually did very easily?

The language of your family. You grew up immersed in it, as everyone around you was speaking it; you automatically learned it by copying them. The fact that your specific language characteristics will vary depending upon the region of the country you were in is clear evidence that you learned from those you were around.

You actually became proficient with this complex skill set without even knowing you were doing it. Do you realize how powerful a personal growth and development tool you have that you are not exercising any choice over?

You are the product of the people and situations that have surrounded you during your life. Everyone and everything you have had contact with has had some kind of influence on your life.

Your thoughts, habits, how you perceive things, mannerisms, speech, opinions, beliefs, how you deal with situations, how you interact with people, the things you like to do and your emotional reactions all have been heavily influenced without your choice.

You have modeled much from your parents and others that you have closely associated with over the years, without even realizing that you are doing it. Now that’s efficient learning! Wouldn’t it have been nice if the learning process in your formal education was this effortless!

Now you may not like all that you have become, since you want to change, but you must admit you are definitely a good example of what you have been modeling all these years. If you make the effort to analyze how you are similar to your lifelong surrounding, you will clearly see yourself in those people and situations.

Is your dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety or depression partially related to what you may have picked up from others in life?

What about a positive attitude, self-motivation, abilities for coping with stress, a deep self-awareness or goal setting habits? Have you been able to pick up any of these positive-thinking attributes from anyone?

All this time you’ve been using this ability to copy others unconsciously to construct who you are today, what if you could take command of the ability and do it on purpose? What if everything you did was an affirmation for specifically what you want!

Since you are so good at modeling, why not use that ability to help make the changes in your life that you desire by consciously choosing specifically who and what to model?

We all come naturally equipped with many powerful abilities that we are not totally utilizing, that if managed better, would support the happiness and satisfaction we crave.

Modeling or copying thought patterns and behavior others have already proven lead to success in their life can be applied to yours with similar outcomes. Just as the characteristics of any raw material, like steel, is the same no matter who is working it, thoughts and actions follow predictable laws.

Whenever you plant an apple seed, if you get anything, you will get an apple tree - always! Never a peach nor a rose. Specific thoughts and actions lead to known outcomes, there is evidence of this everywhere in this universe. Isn’t what we call science the study of how things work predictably?

Another factor that seems to work against your efforts to change and grow is also based on all that you have unknowingly accumulated over the years. This is your basic resistance to change what currently is.

Your life is what it is today and it will take some form of applied energy to change it. Take the example of a piece of steel; if left alone, it will stay in its current form. It takes some sort of focused energy specifically applied to change its form, like heat, force or pressure.

All things tend to stay as they are if there is not something affecting some influence upon it.

Now you are always changing to a certain degree whether you want to or not, but the part of our thought processes commonly called the ego, seems to work to keep things as they are.

So, change in your life will usually take some effort on your part. And the effort must affect all that you have accumulated up to this point.

The thing that many people have difficulty with is in figuring out what and how to change. This may seem odd until you think about how you perceive, analyze and interpret everything based on what you have developed into at this point.

You see, you are trying to do something completely new to you, using the knowledge, experience and mental tools you have used to support your current life. It’s like trying to make a light bulb before glass was invented.

Again this is where the value of modeling known success is evident, you can use the proven developments of someone else to shorten or eliminate the learning curve for yourself. Why go through the long arduous process yourself when someone has already done it.

I’m not saying you won’t ever figure these things out on your own, but how long will it take, if ever? You can choose to use your time and efforts towards actually integrating a known success habit or trait into your life, rather than trying to discover it on your own.

Be more like a scientist with your life, take what others have already proven and carry on from there.

Choose to make part of your life that which supports the life you want, with the help of others.
